Codes & Conventions Table

  Conventional Element
How is it used in Action/Adventure films?
Protagonist

A protagonist a leading character and is often used to be the heroine. The protagonist always has to defeat the antagonist and is normally in some kind of trouble. And he has to save the one he has fell in love with. He has to be young and strong so that it attracts the female’s attention. He looks richer than the antagonist. Also the protagonist has this second life as a hero so he doesn't reveal his true identity until the end of the movie or when his love finds more out about him. They would normally use young and fit men to catch the females attention.
Antagonist

The antagonist is the opposite of a protagonist. He is supposed to be the evil person that tries to destroy the protagonist. He is normally a older looking person to make him look like a villain. The antagonist would have dark make-up and costume on and usually poorer than the protagonist. The antagonist always takes someone valuable away from the antagonist e.g a person the protagonist is in love with. The antagonist is slightly taller than the protagonist and is the one that looks ugly and horrible.
Other characters

Other characters are used in action/adventure movies to make the protagonist and antagonist have the aid and other characters help. And they are put in the film to make them fit in with the type of scene they are put into.Other character are presented to be in either the protagonist or antagonist sides.

Plot

In action/adventure films the plot is always got to do with the antagonist trying to take over the world or take down the protagonist and everything he has left for example when the antagonist kidnaps damsel in distress or something valuable to the protagonist. The plot is based on everything so it has to tell us the mood the characters are in.
Locations

The locations in action/adventure films are usually placed in cities, deserts, on shore e.t.c .Locations are used to show the audience where the action is taking place such as in Fast and Furious 6 the first scene was placed in Rio.It shows where everything is happening such as the fights.
Soundtrack

Soundtracks are used to show the audience that something is going to happen and not to make the film boring because without any music it wouldn’t be interesting. Also music is mostly aimed at teenagers since they know more about music then adults.
Camera

Camera is used to show the audience the different types of techniques such as the long shot,POV(point of view) shot, low angle shot, high angle shot, the establishing shot, extreme close up shot and e.t.c. These shots have also been used to show the audience the emotions.
Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-scene is used on everything such as the costumes,make-up so that the male and damsel-in-distress looks more attractive .The costume to show the kind of person they are such as if they are poor they would’t have highly standered dress wear.
Editing

In action/adventure films editing is used a lot because without  any lighting/effects/location the film wouldn't be fun to watch in cinemas. You need lighting to make the film have more contrast and to show who the protagonist is.The films uses the green screen if its not possible to have that place used.Effects to make the film more real and interesting to watch.
