Positive and Negative Representation of Women

Representation

In this print advert Taylor Swift is wearing a Cinderella dress which is pink that connotates royalty, power and luxury. In this advert women are represented positively as they can show who they really are such as Taylor Swift wanting to be Cinderella and they have good priority.Furthermore it says ‘The beginning of something magical’ which means that women were once a girl and shouldn't stop believing in fairy tales. This print advert also shows that she is attractive as she is a celebrity. The target audience is mainly for women in their 20 or 30’s.

This print advert has represented women negatively as the lady is cleaning the floor while the man is standing and laughing at her.Women have to do everything when it comes to cleaning. This advert also suggests that men are stronger than women because it says ‘watching housewives since 1957’ means that women haven’t had control of the house as they had to do all the chores. This advert is targeted for women as they need to know what is happening with society, they need to learn to be strong and not be those weak wives that actually listen to their husband.

Women in this print advert are represented positively because they are wearing appropriate clothing and are representing America as they are wearing American colored clothing. They look very rich and sporty this advert also make women feel the need to be sporty and patriotic as shown by the clothes they were which may represent the stars and stripes of America. Further more when it says "we salute you" and the women are saluting this makes people happy and respected and would want to buy the cigarette

The History Of Advertising.

The History Of Advertising
·        Advertising is still the most powerful form of advertising and has been around ever since humans started providing each other with goods and services.
·       The Great Fire of London in 1666 was a boost to this type of advertisement, as people used newspapers in the aftermath of the fire to advertise lost & found, and changes of address.

 Advertising And The Industrial Revolutions

·        Before there was no use of adverting because buyers and seller s were personally known to one another.

·        People needed to brand their products, in order for other people to buy it and create mass recommendations to support the mass.

Bubbles the Pears' Soap Advertising Innovation

·         An early advertising success story is that of Pears Soap was that
Thomas Barrett married into the famous soap making family and needed lots of people to buy it so they can survive.

·         He took images considered as "fine art" and used them to connote his brand's quality, purity (ie untainted by commercialism) and simplicity (cherubic children). The campaign was a huge success.

The First Advertising Agencies

·        Everyone was realizing a promotion for their products  was hard if they were to survive.
·        A example of this is the advertising produced for Arrow Shirts by the copy writing team of Earnest Calkins and Ralph Holden, who hired Joseph Leyendecker to create an image for the campaign.

Advertising and the First World War

·        Poster advertising  was so common in Europe than the USA before 1914.
·         When war stopped all the governments made it look like posters turned into propaganda.

Advertising Through The Great Depression

·        People treated themselves to costly with new goods e.g cars, washing machines, and radiograms, and all of them needed to be advertised.
·        The public had an appetite for radio, but there was no real way to get them to pay directly for the expensive broadcasts.

Advertising & TV

·        The 1950s brought post-war affluence and whole new glut of material goods for which need had to be created. Not least of these was the television set.
·        Several different advertisers could buy time within one show, and everything would be out of control.

Madison Avenue - how the Mad Men came to be

·        By the 1950s, advertising was considered a profession in its own right, not just the remit of failed newspapermen or poets.

·        Also this attracted men and women which wanted to thrill peoples mind,it became a huge competition.

How has advertising changed with the progression of technology?

Advertising has changed the progression of technology because before they had goods and services to sell their product and before it was really hard to live and promote their products because then it would be hard to survive without food and electricity. But nowadays they have televisions, phones, moving images, billboards magazines, sponsorship by celebrities, internet viral and lots more. And now lots of people would buy the product because there are lots of Ads and its popular than the olden times.

Advertisement And Print Ads

I chose this advertisement because it makes me laugh each time i watch it.This advert is about children eating apple slices in McDonald. I also like this advert because i love the minions and this advert promotes Despicable Me the movie and promotes McDonald because it is good for the young audience as they like toys and Despicable Me and also as it is happy meal.Another reason this advert is good is because its telling the kids to eat healthily and happily ( apple slices) they also get a little minion of their own.

I like this print advert for many reasons firstly because Beyonce is my favorite singer and i love New York but not as much as i love the color blue. This Ad is about perfume as you can see the bottle it is sponsored by Beyonce. This is mostly aimed at teens and middle class because they would love to smell nice in a very important occasion e.g a party, wedding. This perfume also promotes the company Beyonce hired to make the bottle.

Codes and conventions table

Codes & Conventions Table

  Conventional Element
How is it used in Action/Adventure films?
Protagonist

A protagonist a leading character and is often used to be the heroine. The protagonist always has to defeat the antagonist and is normally in some kind of trouble. And he has to save the one he has fell in love with. He has to be young and strong so that it attracts the female’s attention. He looks richer than the antagonist. Also the protagonist has this second life as a hero so he doesn't reveal his true identity until the end of the movie or when his love finds more out about him. They would normally use young and fit men to catch the females attention.
Antagonist

The antagonist is the opposite of a protagonist. He is supposed to be the evil person that tries to destroy the protagonist. He is normally a older looking person to make him look like a villain. The antagonist would have dark make-up and costume on and usually poorer than the protagonist. The antagonist always takes someone valuable away from the antagonist e.g a person the protagonist is in love with. The antagonist is slightly taller than the protagonist and is the one that looks ugly and horrible.
Other characters

Other characters are used in action/adventure movies to make the protagonist and antagonist have the aid and other characters help. And they are put in the film to make them fit in with the type of scene they are put into.Other character are presented to be in either the protagonist or antagonist sides.

Plot

In action/adventure films the plot is always got to do with the antagonist trying to take over the world or take down the protagonist and everything he has left for example when the antagonist kidnaps damsel in distress or something valuable to the protagonist. The plot is based on everything so it has to tell us the mood the characters are in.
Locations

The locations in action/adventure films are usually placed in cities, deserts, on shore e.t.c .Locations are used to show the audience where the action is taking place such as in Fast and Furious 6 the first scene was placed in Rio.It shows where everything is happening such as the fights.
Soundtrack

Soundtracks are used to show the audience that something is going to happen and not to make the film boring because without any music it wouldn’t be interesting. Also music is mostly aimed at teenagers since they know more about music then adults.
Camera

Camera is used to show the audience the different types of techniques such as the long shot,POV(point of view) shot, low angle shot, high angle shot, the establishing shot, extreme close up shot and e.t.c. These shots have also been used to show the audience the emotions.
Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-scene is used on everything such as the costumes,make-up so that the male and damsel-in-distress looks more attractive .The costume to show the kind of person they are such as if they are poor they would’t have highly standered dress wear.
Editing

In action/adventure films editing is used a lot because without  any lighting/effects/location the film wouldn't be fun to watch in cinemas. You need lighting to make the film have more contrast and to show who the protagonist is.The films uses the green screen if its not possible to have that place used.Effects to make the film more real and interesting to watch.

Sounds,Editing and Camera Techniques

                                                      The Tank Car Chase

In this scene there are many camera techniques used such as the long shot which shows us where the scene is set e.g a motorway. They have also used the close up shot to focus on the characters emotions. Then there is the point of vies shot in the beginning of this scene it shows that the truck is going to be flipped over the wire. These camera techniques have been used to show the audience the characters emotions and tension that is going on during the car chase.
The sounds used in this scene are intense as you can see the car chase and it shows that there is a lot of damage going on as there is a lot of crashing. There is also the fast paced movement as they are driving.

The editing used in this scene is fast paced so that the audience can see the short amount of action in time. Also this clip has clearly used the green screen because of the crashing and jumping of a bridge.

Camera Shot Types Homework Help Sheet

Help sheet for camera shot types

close-up

This shot focuses heavily on the face or a object, normally blurring out the background to have a deeper focus. This is often used to add emphasis to a scene or image.

Extreme close-up

This shot  fits the whole frame of a photo, and you can only see a certain feature within the frame, for instance a human feature that focuses solely on the eyes.

Long shot

This shot shows a realistic scale of an object or human being. It is able to fit objects and people within a scene in the frame without cutting anything out. It is also able to if necessary, show other people in the background.

Mid shot

This shot is where the camera focuses on a figure from the waist and up, or an object with little zoom. The background goes a blurry and focuses on the characters facial expressions.

High Angle

This shot is similar to a birds eye view, but instead of using a helicopter to get an overview of the scene, a crane is used to elevate the camera, and then focus on filming something at ground level.

Low Angle

This shots are filmed at ground level and are used commonly when filming action scenes. This adds the effect of anxiousness for the character on screen, and fear, because the effect is used to build up tension for a scene. This type shot would be used for example when; a character has to jump from one building to another, or from one building to the ground.

POV (Point Of View) Shot

This shot is in the perspective of a character within thefilm, it is as if the audience are experiencing everything the character goes through within that scene. It is a technique used to make the audience feel like they are part of the film, and actually are the main character.

Over The Shoulder

This shot is used to show the perspective of a character, as if they are being watched or followed by somebody. The purpose of this type shot is to engage the audience as if they are in the presence of the characters.

Media Studies Homework date :16/09/2013 by ridhi Patel

The movie is called Fast&Furious 6 ,it had gotten released on the 24th May 2013.The director is Justin Lin and the stars are : Vin Diesel,Paul Walker,Jordana Brewster,Tyrese Gibson,Chris Bridges,Sung Kang,Dwanye Johnson,Michelle Rodriguez,Luke Evans,Gina Carano and John Ortiz. The sub-genre of this movie is romance- action because Shaw takes Letty away and makes her a member of his crew and Dom tries to find her.The signifiers reveal this to the audience in the mid point of the movie where the love interest is mainly Putin. The plot of Fast&Furious 6 is when Hobb ( criminal tracker) tracks shaw who owns his own military.Hobb decides to inherite Dom to help him find Shaw,Hobb goes to see Dom to tell him that his girlfriend isn't dead, but alive and is in Shaws hands.Dom calls his crew to help him.The crew go to a place where they think Shaw will be as his next game which is London.Yes, it is conventional because it has guns and the fast paced action and the exotic locations.Brian is the protagonist because he was an undercover detective and he was told to do a task from the FBI to find the people who hijacked the truck and then once her raced Dom in a race he turned into a criminal and joined Doms crew.Shaw is the antagonist. He is the criminal who freed prison ending up as a criminal mastermind of crime. He is an conventional villain because he put a bomb in the entire capital if the UK which would blow up. No there is not any other character which is conventional. The main signifiers used to reveal it is action to the audience is the guns, clothes, props, trailer, characters are hunks, the stunts which are done. The diegetic sounds are when the cars motor is running and the guns bullet is launched. The non-diegetic sounds is the theme song which is played at the beginning of the movie so it is when Doms sister Mia is pregnant. The type of camera shot I saw were mostly two-shots when the two people were talking. The editing was faced paced because the audience would want more action instead of a lot of talking.Yes they have broken conventions of the action genre because each time they make a new movie it either has a new character and or makes it hard for Doms crew to defeat the bad guys.
